Week 12.
Team Sakina-
The race week is here! We have a lot going on with Team Sakina between now and November 20th and I will try and review all the details.
First, the workout this week- We will be meeting at Fleet Feet at 6:15. We have a couple activities/discussions before starting the workout. The workout will be:
- Endurance group- Will run an easy 3 miles. Let’s focus on getting a longer stretching session in as well as a couple race pace strides.
- Aerobic and Advanced group- Will be doing 6 X 200 and 8 X 200 yard intervals, respectively, on a nearby neighborhood road. These will be at your race pace to get the feeling of that pace in your mind for Sunday. Both groups will do an easy 1 mile warm-up and cool-down and some extra long stretching.
BEFORE the workout for this week, we will have a couple discussions/activities inside the Fleet Feet store, starting at 6:15:
- The race- including pre-race tips, race day planning- the carpool, meeting as a group at the race, etc., race strategy.
- Team Sakina- “beyond the fall season”. We are in the planning stages of an informal winter season starting just after the new year as well as a formal spring season. Team Sakina is for YOU- so help us know what we can do to best meet your needs. We are open to ideas for the when, where, what of the program and also want your input on what project Team Sakina will support in Sakina next.
- A surprise- a quick activity to get everyone excited about the race. In preparation, please think (I know this sounds ironic) of your biggest fear about the race or about running in general. This could also be a fear about yourself or your life that is relevant.
Coming up:
Sunday, November 16th: The Old Reliable Run- our goal race
- I encourage everyone to pre-register. Register here: https://secure2.convio.net/uwta/site/SPageServer
- The race is in downtown Raleigh. The 5k starts at 1pm and the 10k is at 2pm.
- This is a great event for families with a 1 mile fun run and 100 yd dash starting at 3:30. All of Nash Square will be filled with booths, fun events, music, etc. Consider making it an entire Sunday afternoon activity spent with your teammates and family/friends.
- The carpool- will leave from the gravel parking lot across from Armadillo Grill in Carrboro (near FF) at 2 times.
- 1-11:15am- suggested for the 5k runners or anyone who wants to support both races.
- 2- 12:15pm- suggested for the 10k runners.
- I hope to have some cars leaving right after the race for people who need to get home and others remaining for the awards ceremony. I will stay leave at 11:15, drive and stay to make sure everyone has a ride back.
- Meeting at the race- Plan to assemble at a “big tree” near the registration tent. I cannot pin down an exact spot until we get there but I will stay near this tree and we can all put our things there, meet for the warm-up and post-race. I will try to have a sign with the Team Sakina logo.
- Warm-up- at 45 minutes before the start of each race participants are invited to run an easy 10 minutes with the group.
- I will be collecting donations for Sakina at the race. Want to help our scholarship recipients but haven’t been able to bring a donation to practice- bring a donation to the race or the potluck. Thanks so much.
Thursday, November 20th: End of the Season Potluck!
- Will be held at 6:30 at Fleet Feet Inc. located to the left of Performance Bikes and across from Padgett Station. Click here to see a google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=fleet+feet+incorporated&ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ll=35.915852,-79.065599&spn=0.015606,0.027637&z=15&iwloc=A
- You should receive an E-vite asking you to RSVP and organizing what everyone is asked to bring.
- We will be joining all the other No Boundaries groups for this event.
- Come and socialize while eating instead of doing a hard workout! Let’s celebrate a great season J
Heads up: Melissa Moser, a friend and UNC graduate student in the School of Journalism will be joining us at practice, the race and the potluck to make a documentary of Team Sakina. This should be fun. I will get the finished product for her and can burn DVDs for anyone interested.
The alternate shirts are ready and will be distributed at practice. Pick up your shirt if you have opted for this one, or buy a second shirt for $30 if you like it!
Ok, looking forward to our last practice and the race this weekend! Any questions at all, please let me know.
Endure, Sustain, Sakina!
Kerry
