Week 11.
Team Sakina----
Week 11, our last hard work out of the season, is here! Some important announcements this week so please read carefully.
For our workout:
We will be meeting in different locations and at different times to ensure success for everyone.
- Endurance group- Will be running at 10k!!!! The group will be meeting at 6:15 at McDougle to run 6.2 miles through Carrboro neighborhoods. The coaches feel the route leaving from here is the best for the endurance group as they tackle this challenge. See directions below.
- Aerobic group and Advanced group- Will be doing the end-of-the-season “timed mile”. We’ll be meeting at the UNC track at 7pm. Though we considered meeting at McDougall Middle School’s track, the track does not have lights. With daylight savings time, dealing with traffic around the UNC track seemed better than running around the McDougall track in the dark. We pushed back the practice start time to 7pm in hopes that traffic would be better. We won’t be having a seminar and with the short workout should be able to finish around the same time we usually do even though practice is starting later.
In other news:
- The race is less than 2 weeks away! On race day the 2 carpool groups will leave from Carrboro at 11:15am and 12:15pm from the parking lot next to Armadillo Grill giving the 5k and 10k racers ample time to get there, get numbers and warm-up. Let’s not worry about a formal sign-up for the carpool. Rather, one of the coaches will be at each time to coordinate the group going over to the race. The coach will have directions and info about parking etc. Please make use of this opportunity to go with your team members and save the headache and gas of driving yourself. There will be a central meeting place at the race that I will let everyone know about soon.
- The Potluck- will be held on Thursday, Nov 20th at 6:30 at Fleet Feet Inc. We’ll be sending out an E-vite with more information including organizing what everyone should bring. I hope everyone can make it! We’ll be celebrating a great season with food and fun. If anyone has anything or anyone in particular you would like the coaches to speak about please email me (for example- a role model teammate or your favorite thing about the season).
- Team Sakina in the media again!- a graduate student in the journalism department would like to make a short documentary about the team. It seems like everyone is interested about this unique community of women runners we have formed! So, if you see a camera, Melissa Moser is just trying to tell the “Team Sakina” story on film.
- The future of Team Sakina- please be thinking about what direction you would like for Team Sakina to take. As some of you may know, Team Sakina was formed, literally, at an informal meeting with the participants at the end of our last practice last spring. We are open to whatever type of program best meets your needs. We hope you will continue to be involved so come to practice with your ideas and suggestions based on your needs and the groups. Questions include: should we meet over the winter? If so, what should we do? Should we alter the time we meet, the place, the overall format for the winter or spring? What project in Sakina, Tanzania should we sponsor next?
Please, please note the differences to the practice time and location changes for this week! See everyone Thursday as we enter the final preparations for the race. You all are all ready for the challenges of practice this week! The group never ceases to amaze me with your hard work and progress…..
Endure, Sustain, Sakina!
