Week 1.

Welcome, to the Fall 2008 season. For some of you, this may be your first season with No Boundaries and for others, you are seasoned veterans. To those of you who made it to the orientation last week, I hope it was helpful and got your excited about the season. I speak for the other Team Sakina coaches and myself when I say that I think we have a great group this year and that we have 12 weeks of fun and hard work ahead of us in preparation for our goal race!

This Thursday we will have our first weekly run. It will be held at the UNC Track (see directions below). For our first week, each of the 3 groups: Intermediate Endurance, Intermediate Aerobic and Advanced will be doing a similar workout this week only. Warmup and stretching will begin promptly at 6:15 to be followed by a 1 mile time trial, cooldown,  a seminar by Fleet Feet owner, Amanda Bushman, and a short meeting between coaches and their perspective participant groups. In addition, we will be distributing T-shirts at the end of the seminar. The practice should be over between 8:00 and 8:15. Here is an overview of Week 1:

Intermediate Endurance, Intermediate Aerobic, Advanced:
6:15- meet at the UNC track, have parked and be ready to warmup

6:15-6:30/6:40- warm-up and stretching led by coaches

6:30-7:00- 1 mile time trial
- bring a watch if you have one so that you can keep track of your time. Coaches will call out splits as groups complete the 4 laps.
- REMEMBER this is just a way to gauge where you are right now and give you a guide-post using these times and how you felt during this hard effort in future runs. This is not a race. Hopefully we can learn a bit about you as coaches and you can learn more about yourself mentally and    physically. You will have another opportunity to do a 1 mile time trial at        the end of the season. We will talk you             through how to approach      running 1 mile for time and give you suggestions, so don’t worry!

7:00- 7:20- Cooldown and Core

7:20-7:45- Seminar by Amanda Bushman on “40 hour feet”

7:45-8:15 or so- Meet with specific coaches and get T-shirts
- hopefully you already have an idea about which of the 3 group you would like to work with this season. We encourage you to choose a group that fits your goals. If you did not attend the orientation meeting last week, please review details about these programs at   www.sustainfoundation.org/sakina.html. Each of the groups has 2  coaches and will be giving you as much individual coaching as possible.
- Our T-shirts are super cool! They are white, v-neck, Nike wicking shirts with the Team Sakina logo designed by our own Advanced team member,       Hollis Oberlies!

*** We will have a donation bowl at the track to collect donations for our Team Sakina project- Secondary School Scholarships for poor children in Tanzania. It will be at each weekly run. Please feel free to bring cash or a check made out to “Sustain Foundation” or donate online. When you are living on less than a dollar a day, paying $170 for school can be insurmountable. Let’s work as a team to give children the opportunity at an education.

We have a great website up with a good deal of information about the season as well as links to the participant manual that has running articles covering many topics. In addition, please feel free to contact Kerry Brewer (teamsakina@gmail.com) or any of the coaches at any time. Our emails are on the website under the contacts page.

Look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday
