Why/History: During my visit to Tanzania, my homestay was surrounded on all sides by a shack compound housing over a dozen families each staying in only one room. The children greeted me each day when I returned from the city and although I could not speak their language I formed a quick friendship. Upon observing them, they seemed no different from American children- giggling, running around, playing. However in reality their lives are a daily struggle- they do not have sufficient clothing, medicine, or food. Many are sick and malnourished. They need basic necessities such as food, clean water, clothing, medicine as well as toys and other fun items that bring joy. Because of shipping costs, we have been collecting donations towards these materials instead of sending the items themselves. My host family has a bank account that I wire money to who reliably use the money to purchase the materials above locally and disseminate the goods based on my instructions. Primary school (grades 1-7) are free in Tanzania but fees are required beyond completion. In order to get a good job and break the cycle of poverty in each child’s family, these children need to chance to continue their schooling. They are eager to learn and very intelligent.
Details: Sustain Foundation, a non-profit organization in Chapel Hill and Fleet Feet Sports are working with the Fall 2008 Team Sakina program to support scholarships for up to 20 children. We are sending to enroll them in school for one year. The cost of tuition is $70 per child. In addition, each child needs $100 a year for adequate food, transportation fees and school supplies to ensure success.
Current Status: Fleet Feet Sports and Team Sakina is most likely be able to fully fund 10-12 students for a year. However, Sustain Foundation has received a list of 20 students who would like to attend school and are not able to. We would like to enable all of the children to attend school for the year and continue sending these children to school for years to come.
